We are seeking an experienced
Production Scheduler to support plant operations in our Lynchburg, VA plants. Reporting to the Plant Manager, this role is responsible for coordinating material flow from raw materials to finished goods, ensuring on-time production and shipment of customer orders. The ideal candidate will help drive inventory accuracy, improve inventory turns, and reduce working capital. Our manufacturing operations include solvent-based, water-based, canister/aerosol, and hot melt adhesives for specialty applications.
In this role, you will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Ensure compliance with plant safety and environmental policies; actively engage in safety programs.
- Coordinate with corporate purchasing to maintain optimal raw material stock levels, avoiding finished goods stockouts and maximizing inventory turns.
- Work closely with production and warehouse teams to streamline raw material and finished goods layout and material flow.
- Maintain regular communication with corporate planning and customer service to understand and react to demand forecasts.
- Review and validate daily production reports to ensure material usage aligns with planned schedules.
- Run weekly schedule adherence reports, track performance, and report deviations to plant and planning leadership.
- Manage transfer material requirements and collaborate with the shipping department to ensure timely transfers between plants.
- Identify and reduce slow-moving inventory, recommending disposition strategies when necessary.
- Lead and perform cycle counts, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives through data collection and KPI tracking.
- Assist with tracking and reporting KPIs such as uptime, availability, scrap, and production efficiency.
- Ensure timely rework or disposal of scrap, damaged, or returned materials.
- Coordinate with commercial teams to plan seasonal raw material and finished goods availability, reducing post-season inventory.
- Enforce FIFO procedures, particularly for high-value or shelf-life-sensitive materials.
- Organize and lead year-end physical inventory counts, including training teams and verifying accuracy.
- Propose cost-saving opportunities related to inventory management and production operations.
- Assist in conducting time studies and collecting production rate data for performance benchmarking.
- Walk production, shipping, and warehouse areas daily to observe and ensure effective material movement.
- Attend planning meetings to align plant activities with supply chain objectives.
- Enter and validate production data in the SYSPRO ERP system and run variance reports for management review.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager.
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in a production planning role within a high-volume manufacturing environment.
- Strong background in either discrete or process manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience with ERP systems; SYSPRO experience preferred.
- Proven inventory management and warehouse operations experience.
- APICS certification preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, formulas, etc.).
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Understanding of inventory principles such as FIFO and KANBAN.
- Familiarity with production reporting, bills of materials (BOMs), inventory turns, and variance analysis.
- Ability to develop reports and present findings using spreadsheets and graphs.
- Physically able to walk and stand for extended periods, climb ladders, and work near large machinery and elevated temperatures.
- Comfortable occasionally lifting boxes or pails up to 60 lbs. for inventory verification.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and at all organizational levels.
